This November, Jay Gonzalez will be challenging incumbent Charlie Baker to decide who will lead Massachusetts into the future as governor. Governors are executives responsible for enforcing state laws. They also approve or veto proposed laws.

Jay Gonzalez (D)

Gonzalez moved to Massachusetts from Ohio in 1998. He has served as President and CEO of CeltiCare Health, and he served as governor’s secretary of administration and finance. Gonzalez has also been a partner in a Boston law firm.

On the Issues:

LGBT+ Issues

Gonzalez is a supporter of the LGBT+ community. He supports anti-discrimination laws and gender neutral terms on paperwork coming from schools or the government.

Healthcare

Gonzalez believes that major healthcare reform is required to get everyone in Massachusetts the coverage they deserve. He supports switching to a single payer health insurance system such as ‘Medicare for All’, in which the government or another single organization, funded by taxes, would pay all healthcare costs. Gonzalez also supports yes to question one on establishing nurse -to-patient limits.

Education

Gonzalez wants to promote higher education and improve accessibility and affordability. He also wants to increase access to early education for all. Making early education available and affordable for more Massachusetts citizens is a central issue for him.

Immigration

Gonzalez is a supporter of sanctuary cities and opposes President Trump’s measures to limit immigration.

Gun Control

Gonzalez is an advocate for an assault weapons ban on the federal level. He has also promised to continue speaking out against gun violence.

Gonzalez wants criminal justice reform, reversing what he calls over-incarceration, and improve programs to help ex-offenders and victims get back on their feet.

Abortion

Gonzalez is pro-choice and supports access to safe and legal abortion.

Other

Gonzalez supports major campaign finance reform; he believes elections are increasingly too expensive, and candidates are spending too much time fundraising.

He has promised to provide more aid to veterans and their families.

Gonzalez has repeatedly criticized President Trump and his administration for environmental deregulation, or increased laxity in laws protecting the environment, and has spoken out against the Republican party’s lenient approach to climate change.

Charlie Baker (R)

Charlie Baker is the 72nd and current governor of Massachusetts. Raised in Needham, Baker is a Harvard graduate. He has previously served as Secretary of Administration and Finance, as well as Health and Human Services under the Weld and Cellucci administrations. This November Baker will be largely riding on his popularity and previous accomplishments in hopes of winning a second term.

LGBT+ Issues

Similar to Gonzalez, Baker supports trans anti-discrimination laws. According to the Boston Globe, Charlie Baker would deeply consider any bill for gender neutral IDs.

Healthcare

Differing from Gonzalez, Baker does not fully support single payer health insurance. However, he has proposed many MassHealth reforms in the past, most which have been blocked by state legislator. When it comes to nurse to patient limits, Charlie Baker has not spoken much of the issue, and as recently as September 27, has declined to take a position on the issue.

Education

Baker opposes Common Core, which is a nationally standardized set of education goals. He supports lifting the cap on charter schools, allowing more charter schools to open throughout the state.

Immigration

According to Masslive, Charlie Baker supports sanctuary cities, but does not believe Massachusetts should become a sanctuary state, He believes the issue is a local issue, not a state one.

Gun Control

Charlie Baker agrees with Gonzalez that reducing gun violence is a high priority, and holds a low rating from the NRA.

Abortion

Like Gonzalez, Baker is pro-choice.

Other

Baker’s main platform is to grow the economy and improve local infrastructure and schooling while keeping a balanced budget and not raising taxes.
